When watching a presidential speech, you’ve likely noticed a pair of microphones standing prominently on the podium. These microphones are more than just tools for amplifying sound—they’re critical elements of a president or leader’s speech, blending technology with symbolism. Here’s a closer look at why these microphones are designed this way and what they represent.

The Dual Microphone Setup

The use of two microphones is primarily about redundancy and reliability. When delivering a high-stakes address, any technical failure could disrupt the message or diminish its impact. Two microphones ensure a backup is ready to kick in if one malfunctions, guaranteeing seamless audio quality throughout the speech.

While two microphones are not always “hot” due to comb-filtering phase issues, one microphone feed is always recorded for archival purposes to be stored in the Library of Congress archives. Having two provides even more redundancy and reassurance as part of a mission-critical system.

The Hardware

The classic POTUS microphone setup utilizes two Shure SM57 microphones that got their start in the WW2 area, with decades of proven reliability and durability. A huge advantage to using these microphones other than their sound quality is that they’re readily available at most retailers around the world in case of emergency due to logistical issues.

Throughout the last 60+ years, the most common setup involves two SM57s with a dual rubber shockmount to reduce handling noise, and two windscreens to remove wind noise and plosive sounds.

Symbolism and Presentation

Microphones aren’t just about audio—they’re a symbol of communication. The dual microphones on a podium represent the importance of the message and the care taken to ensure every word reaches its audience. This setup has become an iconic image of leadership and formality, from the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “fireside chats” to modern presidential addresses.
